Animating Healthcare Guidance: 2D Explainer Videos for Aneurin Bevan University Health Board
Following the opening of the Grange University Hospital in 2020 and subsequent changes to local hospital capabilities, Aneurin Bevan University Health Board (ABUHB) needed an effective way to inform the public about where to seek medical help for various injuries and ailments. Their solution was a comprehensive information campaign, featuring a series of 2D animated explainer videos outlining the appropriate healthcare pathways. The launch of the first video in local cinemas was a particularly exciting moment!

Their solution was a comprehensive information campaign, featuring a series of 2D animated explainer videos outlining the appropriate healthcare pathways. The launch of the first video in local cinemas was a particularly exciting moment!
My role involved designing a diverse range of characters, spanning all ages and backgrounds, to accurately represent the community served by ABUHB's hospitals. The aim was to create simple yet engaging character designs for animation, and I made sure to inject a healthy dose of light-hearted humour to ensure the videos were not only informative but also eye-catching and entertaining.

These healthcare animation videos were strategically displayed on screens in hospital and GP surgery waiting rooms, reinforcing the message of accompanying leaflets and posters that also featured my character designs.

Beyond the essential Welsh language version, the 2D animated explainer series was thoughtfully translated into ten other languages to reach the diverse range of cultures and ethnicities within the local area. Each language adaptation presented unique challenges, requiring careful adjustments to scene durations to accommodate varying voiceover lengths while preserving the flow and action of the animated content.
Working on these films was an absolute blast, and I believe that enthusiasm shines through on screen! This project demonstrates the power of 2D animation for public sector communication and the effectiveness of animated videos for healthcare in conveying important information to a broad audience.
