Using 2D Animation to Educate Young People About Healthy Relationships for Stori
Stori, a Welsh charity formerly known as Hafan Cymru, has been dedicated for over thirty years to supporting individuals living in fear of domestic abuse. Their vital ‘Spectrum’ (Sbectrwm) project adopts a whole-school approach, working with schools, pupils, and parents to foster understanding of healthy relationships and ultimately tackle domestic abuse.

To aid this crucial mission, Stori commissioned a series of three animated videos specifically aimed at pupils in keystages 1, 2, and 3. The goal of these educational animations was to help children grasp the distinctions between healthy and unhealthy relationships. The films needed to navigate very sensitive topics for children at an age where understanding nuance and potentially harmful behaviour can be challenging, while also visually representing abstract concepts like worry or anxiety.

Recognizing the diverse comprehension levels across age groups, the tone of voice and language were carefully tailored for each of the three 2D animated explainer videos. Consequently, the visuals also needed to be age-appropriate and engaging. I designed the characters and environments with subtle variations to ensure each children's animation resonated effectively with its intended audience.

Working on these three charity animation projects was a genuine joy. I sincerely hope they continue to be a valuable resource in helping children navigate these complex and sensitive subjects and guide them towards seeking any necessary support. This project underscores the power of 2D animation for charities and its effectiveness in delivering sensitive educational content to young audiences through engaging and accessible visuals.
